Using Site Explorer

The explorer loads aerial imagery from USGS, terrain from Re:Earth, and optional flood, wetlands, protected-interest and habitat map layers from FEMA, USGS and USFWS. Viewing the map sends requests for the visible area to those providers. Checking mapped context sends your selected coordinates and search extent, or your drawn site outline, to FEMA, USGS, USFWS and USDA NRCS. Those services receive technical request information, including your IP address, and have their own data practices.

Submitting a street address sends it to BaseMark’s address service and then to the US Census Geocoder. The application does not retain the address or returned match. Short-lived hashed-IP counters limit repeated requests; they contain no address text. Ground-elevation checks send the selected coordinates to USGS. Rail, highway, airport and port searches send the selected point and search radius to the relevant FRA, FHWA, FAA and BTS mapping services hosted by Esri. EPA facility queries send the reference point and a 5 km radius to the EPA ECHO mapping service hosted by Esri. Soil queries send the selected point or drawn outline to USDA NRCS Soil Data Access. Energy facility searches use a public EIA data extract served with the website.

Town searches use a GeoNames index served with this website. The explorer does not keep search history, save coordinates in page addresses, or send field notes to BaseMark automatically. GeoJSON files are read on your device without uploading the file. A source check sends an imported or drawn outline to the mapping providers. Downloaded drawings and notes stay on your device; copying notes uses your clipboard. Discuss this location opens a short draft in your mail application, where you can review and edit it before sending.
