Sources, coverage and how this works
Public mapping
USGS / USDA National Map supplies imagery. Dates and resolution vary. Re:Earth and Mapterhorn supply terrain under CC BY 4.0, subject to availability.
FEMA supplies National Flood Hazard Layer zones and separate study-availability boundaries. Effective dates, amendments and local studies require separate review.
USFWS National Wetlands Inventory is biological mapping. It does not determine regulatory jurisdiction or establish absence of wetlands. Coverage and survey dates are not established by this tool.
Land and access records
Soil composition comes from USDA NRCS Soil Data Access. EPA ECHO supplies environmental facility and program records. Protected interests use USGS PAD-US 4.1; critical habitat uses the USFWS final and proposed line and polygon inventories. These sources do not establish title, jurisdiction or site feasibility.
FRA, FHWA, FAA, USACE and BTS supply the rail, highway, aviation and port records. Each result retains its own source, date basis and geographic scope. NHS record downloads include the original publisher metadata.
Search and privacy
Address lookup sends the submitted address through BaseMark to the US Census Geocoder for an approximate address-range match. Geographic county and state may differ from the mailing address. Town search uses a reduced, self-hosted GeoNames cities1000 extract, CC BY 4.0, downloaded September 23, 2026. It includes smaller towns but is not a street-address or parcel directory. Initial exploration covers the contiguous United States; data availability varies.
Map providers receive your IP address and the region you view. Source checks send the selected coordinates and radius, or the drawn outline, directly to the mapping providers, including USGS for ground elevation. Land checks also send the point or outline to USGS, USFWS and USDA NRCS. Transportation checks send the reference point to official services hosted by Esri. County queue checks send the selected reference point to US Census TIGERweb, which receives your IP address. Historical queue counts use a self-hosted aggregate attributed to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and GridTracker under CC BY 4.0. Energy facility records use a self-hosted extract of the EIA 2025 final survey, published September 10, 2026. Exploration does not automatically send your location to the BaseMark team.
